José Escuder Muntadas was a visionary man with a sparkle in his eyes and the confidence to start a small business that is still going strong today. It was 1896 when José opened his own drugstore on Entença Street in Barcelona. It was a smart move, as José had a natural gift for business.
He worked for a while, until he offered his customers what we now know as the repackaging service for ingredients.
José distributed the ingredients needed to make prescription formulas for pharmacies, drugstore products and small manufacturers in small cardboard containers. Soon, he needed larger premises near Paseo de Gracia.
In 1936, Barcelona was not the friendliest of places, and José knew it, so he moved his business to San Sebastián, taking one of his workers, Óscar Vidal, with him. There was no time to dwell on the past. There was a life to build.
José and Óscar, who had fallen in love with Barcelona, returned with their families in 1940, determined to keep moving forward. That year, the business moved to 278 Provenza Street. Life moved very quickly back then, and we were well known in the industry. Our orange cardboard boxes with green labels did not go unnoticed.
In 1960, the business passed into the hands of José’s sons, who, after their father’s death, decided to sell it to Óscar Vidal and Isabel Jorquera (grandparents of the current managing director, Sam Jul). It was a strategic move, as Óscar had the talent to run the business he had seen grow alongside his son-in-law Albert Jul, who took over in 1980.
With the arrival of the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, companies and warehouses operating in the city centre had to move to the outskirts. We did so, first to Terrassa and then, in the early 2000s, to Rubí, where we are currently located. Anyone might think, ‘A whole century doing the same thing,’ but looking back, we have undergone a continuous process of adaptation, which could sum up our history: we adapt to changing times in order to continue operating with vision, while remaining true to ourselves.
The transformation
We are ready for the future!
